VERTIS - less language barrier, more opportunities for successful integration in Lithuania
Free translation services through the VERTIS system from May 1 became available to all citizens of third countries and to Lithuanian institutions providing services to them.
The system developed by the Reception and Integration Agency is the first one-stop platform in Lithuania for ordering written and oral translation services. It serves as a bridge between registered users—foreign nationals or Lithuanian institutions—and translators. The system is easy to use: after logging in, users simply select the desired translation service and specify the deadline. The system then automatically assigns a suitable translator to the job based on the nature of the request.
Free translation services are available in more than 40 languages and are dedicated to for citizens of third countries who need translation assistance using public services, including asylum and integration, education, health care, social services and the area of ensuring basic human rights.
Translation can be ordered both by foreigners themselves and by self-governing institutions, state, non-governmental and other organizations providing services for citizens of third countries.
According to Agency director Gediminas Pociaus, this tool will strengthen cooperation among Lithuanian institutions and improve the accessibility of public services for foreigners by providing information in a language they understand.
“Until now, translation services were ordered on an ad hoc basis, which made the process relatively slow. VERTIS reduces the administrative burden on institutions, as they no longer need separate translation contracts—once registered in the system, translation services become quickly and easily accessible. VERTIS is also beneficial for foreigners, as it helps foster their independence—allowing them to go and obtain services on their own, without relying solely on the assistance of social workers,” says G. Pocius, director of the Reception and Integration Agency.
Minister of Social Security and Labor Jūratė Zailskienė emphasizes that VERTIS will contribute to the proper protection of human rights.
"Lithuania purposefully creates innovative measures so that the language barrier does not become a barrier an obstacle for people to feel dignified and safe, to understand their rights and duties using public services. VERTIS is innovative and an important translation system that ensures the human right to understand asylum and integration process, as well as strengthening human rights in practice protection. For example, victims of violence can more easily apply to institutions or specialized complex assistance centers and to receive consultation in an understandable language", says Minister J. Zailskiene
VERTIS provides an opportunity to order an oral or written translation and is available 4 types of translation are distinguished - live translation, telephone translation, translation video call and translation of documents.
Once selected translation by phone, the system provides the number that was agreed upon when called in time, the foreigner is connected with an interpreter. After choosing the translation of the video by calling, the customer must create an appointment at the desired time platform, such as Teams, Zoom or another, and to the VERTIS system upload the connection link through which the foreigner will join the conversation and the interpreter providing the service. It can also be if necessary the arrival of the translator at the agreed place is organized.
Meanwhile, after choosing the written translation service, the VERTIS system ensures the translation of documents related towith access to asylum, integration tools and the guarantee of basic human rights: personal documents, birth and marriage certificates, divorce or guardianship certificates documents, asylum examination procedure documents and others.
Project "Centralized translation services for third-country nationals or for stateless persons" is financed from the Asylum, Migration and funds of the integration fund 2021-2027.
